GTA 6 Radio Genres and Their History in the Series

Rockstar has announced six GTA VI radio stations. For each genre, how new is it really? We checked Grand Theft Wiki's station lists to see what the series has done before, and what looks genuinely new.

Facts come from the named sources below. Where a claim is only reported, or rests on one person's account, we say so.

How we checked

We used Grand Theft Wiki's station lists for GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV and its Episodes, and GTA V. It does not cover Liberty City Stories or Vice City Stories on that page, so it may miss a station or two. Where we say a genre is new, we mean it does not appear in those lists, not that Rockstar has never done it.

Latin: Cocoteo FM

Rockstar describes Cocoteo FM as modern Latin, hosted by El Martillo and La Gata. Latin music has a long history in the series. Radio Espantoso in Vice City played Latin jazz and salsa, San Juan Sounds in GTA IV and its Episodes played Latin and reggaeton, and East Los FM appears in GTA V. So Latin is not new. What is new is the focus on modern Latin music, which fits Miami's culture.

Country: Back Country Radio

Back Country Radio plays country, hosted by MW and Delta Dawne. The series has had country stations before, but not many. K Rose appeared in San Andreas and Rebel Radio, an outlaw country, Southern rock and rockabilly station hosted by Jesco White, appeared in GTA V. GTA III, Vice City and GTA IV have none in Grand Theft Wiki's lists.

Metal: The Chamber 106.6

The Chamber 106.6 is metal, with DJ Kerry and DJ Tom. The series has a proud metal tradition. V-Rock in Vice City played heavy, thrash and glam metal, Liberty City Hardcore in the Episodes was an extreme metal show, and Liberty Rock Radio 97.8 played heavy metal in the Episodes. No metal station is listed in GTA III, San Andreas, base GTA IV or GTA V, though Radio X in San Andreas covered alternative metal alongside rock and grunge.

Hip-hop: Dirty South Classics

Dirty South Classics is regional rap and hip-hop, hosted by Trick and Trina. Hip-hop is the most repeated genre in the series. Game FM appears in GTA III, Wildstyle in Vice City, Playback FM and Radio Los Santos in San Andreas, The Beat 102.7 and The Classics 104.1 in GTA IV, and FlyLo FM, Radio Los Santos, The Lab and West Coast Classics in GTA V.

What does not appear in those lists is a station themed on Southern rap. The earlier stations lean West Coast and East Coast, so that angle looks new. We cannot be certain, since it is our reading of the lists rather than a documented claim.

Pop: Flash FM

Flash FM is a returning name. In Vice City it played pop rock and synthpop, with DJ Toni. Other pop-leaning stations include Lips 106 and Head Radio in GTA III and Non Stop Pop FM in GTA V. So pop is established. What is new is the name and the Vice City setting coming back together.

African music: AfroBank FM

Rockstar describes AfroBank FM as African music, including amapiano, African classics and 3-step, hosted by Burna and Palmsy. This is the one genre where we found no clear precedent. No station on Grand Theft Wiki's list is labelled African. The nearest is International Funk in GTA IV, listed as funk and afrobeat. The reggae and dub stations on the list, such as K-Jah and Tuff Gong, are not labelled African.

Because of that, we say that no earlier station is documented as an African-music station, not that AfroBank FM is the first. That wording leaves room for stations we could not check.

What it adds up to

Rockstar has not built six brand-new genres. It has refreshed four familiar ones, pop, Latin, metal and hip-hop, and added a country station, and it has taken a real risk with African music and Southern rap. That is a thoughtful mix for a game set in a fictionalised Florida.

As with all of these, the proof is in the playlist. Rockstar has not published song lists, and the ones circulating online are community compilations. We will update this guide when real tracklists exist.
