Why Is Michael Such a Terrible Father?
Michael De Santa has a mansion, a pool and a family that cannot stand him. GTA 5 treats this as comedy, and it is also one of the most honest things the series has done. We went through the missions that show it.

This is fan opinion, not reporting. Game facts come from the sources below; the judgements are ours.
Where Michael comes from
According to Grand Theft Wiki, Michael was born Michael Townley in a Midwestern trailer park with no father around. A high-school football career faded, and he was in and out of prison before he was twenty. A smuggling job in 1985 began his bond with Trevor, and he married Amanda and had Jimmy and Tracey.
That backstory matters, because Michael is a man who grew up without a father and is now failing to be one. The game never says it directly. It does not need to.
The house he bought with a lie
A bank job in North Yankton in 2004 collapsed. According to Wikipedia, FIB agent Dave Norton caught Michael, and Michael gave up his crew and took an off-the-books witness-protection deal with a new identity. Norton took credit for stopping the robbers. Michael then lived in Los Santos, paying Norton a large monthly sum, and Grand Theft Wiki says Norton later turns out to be corrupt and steers him into dangerous jobs.
He has everything he thought he wanted. He is miserable, and he takes it out on the people he lives with. That is the root of the problem. He gave up his old life for his family, then resented them for it.
Jimmy and Tracey
Jimmy plays games and smokes and has no plans. Tracey wants to be famous and has no sense. Michael sees both as failures and cannot see how much of that he built. He shouts, he threatens, and he buys them off. He is bad at listening, which is a much bigger problem than shouting.
The family scenes are funny because they are true. Everyone is playing a part in a house where nobody is honest. Amanda overspends and has affairs, the kids take risks, and everyone argues. Grand Theft Wiki says Amanda eventually leaves with a new partner and takes the kids.
The missions that show it
Three missions carry most of the family story. In Father/Son, according to Grand Theft Wiki, Jimmy phones to say Michael's yacht is being stolen after he tried to sell it. Michael and Franklin chase it down the freeway in Amanda's car, Franklin boards the yacht, and Michael catches Jimmy, who is hanging from the sail. Afterwards Jimmy asks to hang out. It is a comic mission with a sad centre: a son who wants his father's attention and finds a way to get it.
In Daddy's Little Girl, per GTA Wiki, Michael races Jimmy on bikes to Del Perro Pier after learning that Tracey is at a yacht party with porn producers. He swims out, breaks it up, throws one producer overboard and escapes with Tracey on a Seashark. In Fame or Shame, Tracey auditions for a TV show without telling her parents. Jimmy tells Michael and Trevor, who go to Maze Bank Arena, where Lazlow introduces her and she performs a provocative dance. The two men break it up, and Tracey later phones Michael to accuse him of ruining her life.

Therapy as a joke that is not a joke
Michael goes to therapy, and the sessions with the psychologist Dr. Isiah Friedlander are among the sharpest writing in the game. They show a man who understands exactly what is wrong and does nothing about it. According to Grand Theft Wiki, in a late visit the player can choose to kill Friedlander. It is not that Michael lacks insight. He lacks the will to change.
Does the game let him improve?
A little. There are moments where Michael tries to connect with Jimmy and nearly manages it, and Grand Theft Wiki lists a mission, Reuniting the Family, that brings the family back together after the Merryweather attack on the house. The game stops short of giving him a redemption arc, which is the right call. He gets better in small ways, and he stays someone you would not want as a dad.
Why it is good writing
Most open-world protagonists have no family because it would complicate the fantasy. Michael is the exception, and the complication is the point. He is a criminal who cannot stop, and the people who pay for it live in his house. Ned Luke plays him as a man who is funniest when he is most ashamed.
The wiki's reading of his themes is escaping the past, failed fatherhood, identity and deception, midlife crisis and loyalty and betrayal. Those are not new themes, but they are rare in this kind of game.

What GTA 6 might learn
If GTA 6 gives Jason and Lucia the same kind of weight, it will be because Rockstar remembered what Michael taught it: the best crime stories are about what crime costs the people at home. We will see on November 19, 2026.
