Is Trevor Actually GTA's Most Loyal Friend?

Trevor Philips is the unhinged one. He is also the only member of the crew who never really leaves anyone behind. That is stranger than it sounds, and this essay tries to take it seriously.

This is fan opinion, not reporting. Game facts come from the sources below; the judgements are ours.

Who Trevor is

Trevor Philips is played by Steven Ogg. According to Grand Theft Wiki, he ran a small air-freight operation in North Yankton, and a cargo job in 1985 on which Michael killed a man bonded the two. A man named Brad Snider joined their crew later. In the present of the game, Trevor lives in a trailer in Sandy Shores, cooks methamphetamine with a partner called Chef, and has built a criminal business he calls Trevor Philips Industries.

That business is a small kingdom of violence and rubbish in the desert. It also tells you what Trevor values: he has a crew, a home and a name over the door. Everything he builds is a version of the crew he lost.

Nine years of believing a lie

In Grand Theft Auto V, a botched bank job in Ludendorff, North Yankton, in 2004 appears to kill Michael. According to Wikipedia, Trevor is told that Brad was imprisoned and that the FIB killed Michael. In fact, Michael faked his death in a deal with FIB agent Dave Norton and went into witness protection. Brad died in the job and was buried in Michael's grave.

Trevor mourns for nine years. When he discovers Michael is alive and living as Michael De Santa in Los Santos, his anger is huge, but it is the anger of someone who was loyal to a man who was not loyal to him. That is the heart of Trevor. His violence is a mess, but his loyalty is real. He did not move on. Michael did.

The grave

The turning point is a scene at the grave. Grand Theft Wiki describes how Trevor digs it up and finds Brad's decomposed body instead of Michael's. Michael has followed him there, and Trevor's anger turns on him. What the scene shows is that Trevor's rage is not mostly about Brad's death or even about being lied to. It is about being left out by someone he thought of as family.

The game lets the two men reconcile enough to do one more job together. That reconciliation is partial, and it is what the third ending is about.

What loyalty looks like

He treats Franklin as an equal from the start, and he is quick to take Michael's side when an outsider threatens him. These are small moments in a story about explosions, and they are the ones that matter. He is angry at Michael, but he does not abandon him, and he reacts to every threat to the crew as a threat to himself.

He is also loyal to a version of the past that does not exist any more, which is why it hurts. Loyalty to a memory is still loyalty. Trevor does not want a new crew. He wants the old one back, and he keeps acting as if it can be.

The counter-argument

Trevor also kills people, endangers friends and treats loyalty as permission to do what he wants. According to Grand Theft Wiki, he kills Johnny Klebitz and other members of the Lost MC at their camp in Blaine County, which hurts if you loved Johnny's own game. A friend who ruins your life for your own good is not the friend you want. If loyalty means caring about what the other person wants, Trevor often fails.

That is why this is a debate and not a fact. His loyalty is real, and it is also selfish. Both are true.

The ending that tests it

The game's final choice belongs to Franklin, and it has three options. In one, Franklin kills Trevor. In another, he kills Michael. In the third, all three survive, with help from Lamar and Lester, and the men stay friends but stop working together.

The third ending is the one that suggests the story is about whether Trevor's loyalty can be honoured. It does not erase what Michael did, and it does not make Trevor safe. It lets the three of them live with each other, which is a more mature outcome than either of the other two.

This section discusses the endings only in general terms. We do not list who dies in the third ending.

How critics saw the game

Wikipedia lists GTA V's Metacritic scores as 97 for the original and PS4 and Xbox One releases and 96 for PC. Among its awards are a Game Developers Choice Award for Best Technology and the BAFTA for Best British Game. We found no documented acting award for Steven Ogg, so we do not claim one. His performance is, for many fans, the thing they remember most.

So is he the most loyal?

In a series about people who sell each other out, Trevor is the one who keeps showing up. We would call him the most loyal friend in GTA, and the most exhausting. You can think those are the same thing.
