Why CJ Is the King of GTA

Ask ten GTA fans for the best protagonist and you will get ten answers. Mine is Carl Johnson, and the reason has little to do with nostalgia. It is about what the game asks of you, who it puts around you, and what it sounds like when you drive.

This is fan opinion, not reporting. Game facts come from the sources below; the judgements are ours.

He has somewhere to come back to

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas opens with CJ returning to Los Santos after his mother is murdered. Almost every GTA protagonist arrives in a city as a stranger, with a debt to pay or a start to make. CJ arrives home. The Grove Street Families, his brother Sweet, and his old friends are not a job to take. They are his past, and they are waiting.

That gives every mission a second layer. You are not only completing a task; you are deciding how a man who left deals with the neighbourhood he left behind. According to Wikipedia's summary of the plot, CJ rebuilds the Grove Street gang, clashes with a corrupt police unit led by Frank Tenpenny, and uncovers the truth behind his mother's death. Few games before or since gave a protagonist that kind of personal weight.

A whole state, not just a city

San Andreas is set in 1992 in a fictional state based on California and Nevada. It has three cities: Los Santos, based on Los Angeles, San Fierro, based on San Francisco, and Las Venturas, based on Las Vegas, with countryside and desert between them. At the time, that scale was extraordinary. It is the fifth main-series Grand Theft Auto game, and it was a leap from the single city of its predecessors.

Wikipedia lists more than 180 vehicles, territory fights with rival gangs, a two-player mode, and role-playing elements: CJ can change his appearance and build his skills. The world answers him. He can lift weights, eat too much, change his hair, get tattoos and pick his clothes, and the people around him react. That level of attachment between player and character is still unusual.

A cast that makes him better

A lead character is only as strong as the people who push against him, and CJ is pushed by one of the best ensembles the series has had. Young Maylay voices CJ. Faizon Love plays his brother Sweet, Clifton Powell plays Big Smoke, MC Eiht plays Ryder, and Yo-Yo plays his sister Kendl. Samuel L. Jackson plays the corrupt officer Tenpenny, with Chris Penn as his partner Eddie Pulaski.

Further out, Ice-T voices the rapper Madd Dogg, Peter Fonda is the conspiracy-minded hippie The Truth, James Woods plays the government agent Mike Toreno, Clifton Collins Jr. is Cesar, and David Cross is Zero. That is a lot of recognisable voices, and the writing gives all of them room. CJ works partly because he is the grounded centre of that crowd.

The radio was part of the story

For a site that loves GTA radio, this matters most. Grand Theft Wiki lists 11 stations in San Andreas, including one talk station, and GamesRadar's pre-release coverage counted around 20 DJs. K-DST played classic rock, with Axl Rose voicing a DJ, Tommy "The Nightmare" Smith. Playback FM played East Coast hip-hop, with Chuck D as a host. Bounce FM was funk, hosted by George Clinton, and K-Rose covered country.

Radio Los Santos gave the West Coast hip-hop of the city's own streets, Radio X played alternative rock and grunge, K-Jah West was reggae, SF-UR was house, CSR 103.9 played new jack swing, Master Sounds 98.3 played rare groove, and WCTR was talk radio. Driving between the three cities with that variety in the background was a big part of why the world felt lived in.

How critics saw it

Reviewers were generous. Wikipedia records Metacritic scores of 95 for the PS2 original, 93 for the Windows and Xbox versions, and 84 for the mobile version. Critics praised the characters, the narrative and the open world. It won several awards, including a Spike Game of the Year and a Golden Joystick Ultimate Game of the Year, and by September 2011 Wikipedia puts its total sales at 27.5 million copies.

It was not all praise. Critics also pointed to mission design, technical problems, and the way the game portrays race. A hidden minigame known as Hot Coffee led to a brief Adults Only re-rating of the game. A fair case for CJ has to admit that his game was controversial as well as beloved.

He stays decent in a game about betrayal

The story turns on betrayal by people CJ trusted, and the most painful betrayals come from his own circle, including Big Smoke. What keeps it from becoming bleak is that CJ keeps choosing his family. He is angry, he makes mistakes, and he is also the one who keeps trying to hold things together. That is a better hook than cynicism.

Young Maylay's performance carries a lot of this. CJ's voice is plain and warm, and that is hard to fake. A protagonist who sounds like a person you would like to know is rarer in this series than one who sounds dangerous.

Where the other leads fall short

Niko Bellic is the sharper study of a man who cannot escape violence. Michael, Trevor and Franklin are a brilliant trio. Tommy Vercetti is the coolest. But none of them leaves you with the feeling that you grew up with them, which is what CJ does. Each of them is defined by a plot. CJ is defined by a place and the people in it.

That is a personal measure, and you can disagree. If you do, tell us who you would pick.

What it means for GTA 6

GTA VI has two leads, Jason and Lucia, in Vice City and the state of Leonida. The best thing it can borrow from CJ is that sense of place: a protagonist whose world is bigger than the next mission, and a radio that fills the car with a real culture. Rockstar has announced six stations so far, from modern Latin to country to metal. We will find out how well they work on November 19, 2026.
