What Happened to Project Americas?
Project Americas is one of the most repeated names in GTA 6 lore, and one of the most misunderstood. It was not a separate cancelled game. It was an early, much bigger version of GTA 6.

Facts come from the named sources below. Where a claim is only reported, or rests on one person's account, we say so.
What Project Americas was
Project Americas is the codename for early work on what became Grand Theft Auto VI. The name first surfaced through leaks and forum posts, and was then reported in Bloomberg Businessweek's October 14, 2026 cover story on the making of GTA 6, written after Jason Schreier visited Rockstar North in Edinburgh.
Many posts online say it was a cancelled game from Rockstar San Diego, the studio that used to be Angel Studios. We found no reputable source for that. The cancelled Angel Studios projects that are documented, such as Ground Effect and an unreleased Midnight Club, are different games.
The reported plan
According to coverage of the Bloomberg piece, the original plan for the game covered large parts of North and South America. At some point it was cut back to Miami and its surroundings, which became Vice City and the rest of the state of Leonida. Bloomberg does not say when that happened or why, and Rockstar has not explained.
The same reporting says Rockstar's Rob Nelson and senior colleagues made a first research trip to Miami in 2015. This is reported from secondary summaries of the feature, so treat the details as reported rather than confirmed.
How big the project became
Bloomberg's feature reportedly puts GTA VI at more than eight years in development, with 4,711 staff across 12 offices. It also reports that Rockstar's Jennifer Kolbe said the game did not exceed a budget of $1.5 billion. These figures come from coverage of the article, and Rockstar has not published them itself.
The same coverage says the game slid from fall 2025 to May 26, 2026, and then to November 19, 2026, and that Rockstar said it would not finish the game by crunching. Take-Two confirmed the November 19 date in its filings.

Scaled back, not cancelled
Nothing was cancelled in the way Agent or Bully 2 were shelved. The ideas were reduced and folded into the game now set in Leonida, with Vice City and a cast led by Jason and Lucia. Rockstar has only said publicly, in February 2022, that development was well underway.
Reports on when full production began conflict. Some say preliminary work started around 2014 or 2015 and full production in 2018 or 2020. Rockstar has never confirmed a start date, so we do not state one.
Why it still matters
Project Americas explains something fans feel when they look at the finished game: Leonida is dense rather than continental. A smaller map with more detail is a choice Rockstar appears to have made after trying something bigger. Whether you read that as a loss or a gain is a matter of taste, but it is a better story than a cancelled game.
GTA VI is due on November 19, 2026. The radio announced so far, six stations, fits the picture of a single region built with care.
